Our Story

Over 28 years of service and care
Gateway Funerals was first established in a small funeral home in Edithvale, Victoria in the late 1980’s. Gateway built its reputation in the community as offering a personalised and high standard of service due to the commitment and professional personal service provided by the thoughtful staff.

Due to the changing needs of the community, it became necessary in 1993 to relocate our Funeral Home premises to ChelseaHeights with new and modern facilities available for our patrons.
Today, more than 28 years on, Gateway continues to maintain the high standards of service and professionalism created by its predecessors.

Gateway is an active and proud member of both the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) and Selected IndependentFuneral Homes (SIFH), organisations which recognise excellence in funeral service.

Testimonial

“Just a letter of thanks for the professional way you conducted our fathers funeral.

From the first phone call, to inquire how to take our Dad from the nursing home into your care, and then the appointment with you, the whole sad occasion has been seamless and thoroughly professional from the outset.

We are glad we chose Gateway to handle the funeral, as every detail was taken care of, and the service was just the best and your choice of civil celebrant, we could not have wished for a better send off for Dad.

The car was on time. The Aussie flag on Dads coffin was a great thought, and the way you all helped Isobel, to and from the service was first class.

I will recommend your company to anyone that has to go through the sadness and loss and then arrange a funeral, for a loved one, your professionalism and attention to detail, took all those arrangements out of our mind at such a sad time.

Thank you again to everyone.”

Our Journey

Gateway Funerals was first established in Edithvale in the late 1980’s. The business quickly developed due to the commitment and professional personal service provided by the thoughtful staff. It became necessary in 1993 to relocate our Funeral Home premises to Chelsea Heights with new and modern facilities available for our patrons.

John W Grant Funerals was first established in the 1990’s in Dandenong and later in Bentleigh East. The company quickly gained a reputation of offering a dignified and sincere service for a reasonable cost.

Early in 2004 Gateway Funerals and John W Grant Funerals amalgamated to become John Grant Funerals that we see today.

We fully understand the importance of making a fitting tribute to a loved one, a memory that will last forever. In the midst of the sadness that you feel at this time, the thought of arranging this final farewell can be a daunting prospect. Our caring staff are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to guide you through what can appear to be a maze of arrangements both wanted by you and required by others.

During the service, as you reflect on the life being remembered, let us enhance these memories by using some of your treasured photographs and a favourite piece of music, to create an audio visual celebration of the life journey undertaken by your loved one.

In today’s multicultural society, it is important to note that all Religious and Cultural needs can be fulfilled by us and that funeral planning and services can be arranged throughout metropolitan Melbourne, or interstate if required.

As you enter the tranquillity of our Funeral Chapel, you will be filled with a sense of peace, knowing that your loved one’s final farewell will be treated with dignity and respect. The 75 seat Chapel is fully air conditioned for the comfort of mourners both old and young and an adjoining area can be used to accommodate up to 200 people if required.

Our sound system allows for every spoken memory or musical tribute to be heard clearly by all and the modern plasma screens ensure that pictorial memories to be shared on this special day are viewed the best possible way. Light refreshments can be served in the area adjoining the Chapel following the service, to allow friends and family the time to share, reflect and to comfort each other before moving away.

If someone dies at home, the first person to be contacted is the Doctor of the deceased. The Doctor, or a locum, will attend to confirm that death has occurred. Once this is done, you need to contact the Funeral Director to arrange the transfer of the deceased into their care. There is no hurry for this if you want to spend some quiet time with your loved one.

If death occurs at a nursing home or hospital, the Funeral Director can be contacted by yourself or the staff to arrange transfer of the deceased. Then arrangements for the funeral service can be arranged at your convenience. Our staff are contactable 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (03) 9776 0299 or click here to contact us.

Today, more and more people are considering the option to pre-pay and pre-arrange their funeral. Making decisions at a time of grief can be extremely difficult for those left behind. And so by planning ahead, you can relieve your loved ones of this painful responsibility. We are able to make all of the information regarding this choice available to you to make a fully informed decision.

All Health Department guidelines are strictly followed by our company and our staff in the preparation of deceased persons. Should viewing of the deceased be desired, this will be arranged in a dignified manner.
